In order to measure them in the energy range of 0.5 - 3.5 MeV, the required beam energy is around 1 MeV for a ^3He^0 beam and 3 MeV for a ^6Li^0 beam with the beam current density of around 1 mA/cm^2 for both cases. Among the various methods to produce such a high energy neutral beam, the acceleration of negative ions is most favorable. Recent results of relatively small-scale experiments on these negative ion sources show that the required current density is now realistic.
